In this third comparative analysis, we will include at least the following major European cities: London (United Kingdom), Berlin and Munich (Germany), Paris (France), Lisbon and Porto (Portugal), Rome and Milan (Italy), Madrid and Barcelona (Spain).

MedUX invites both private and public stakeholders from across Europe to participate in this 5G benchmarking campaign. Stakeholders can request an extension to include cities and countries of their interest, ensuring broader insights into the state of 5G networks in Europe:

  • Private stakeholders—such as operators, vendors and manufacturers— are welcomed to request an extension of the scope to include new countries and cities of their interest, expanding the reach of the study.
  • Public stakeholders—such as regulators, national and regional governments, and city halls—are invited to participate as part of our #MedUXImpact initiative helping transform connectivity and to join this program.

What You Can Expect from This 5G Measurement Campaign

This benchmark will allow telecommunications operators, service providers, and regulatory authorities to gain a deeper understanding of the true performance of 5G networks from a customer perspective.

Speed is not everything, and the industry is trying to adapt to meet the needs of customers when using real services. Typical end-users do not necessarily benefit much from download speeds of multiple 100 Mbps (not yet). End-users just use a small percentage of those headline speeds when web browsing, streaming, and engaging in any other regular internet activities. Indeed, some experience categories such as Reliability (how consistent a network performs) or CDN performance (how your content is served) are way more relevant in the 5G Era than just performing a throughput and ping test against optimized test servers to infer the customer experience.

So, what do users care about in 5G? A consistent experience across services and applications is king, particularly application performance and time-to-content everywhere and every time, at every click to a video, websites, social networks, cloud storage, games, etc.

As a result of our 5G QoE measurement campaign, you will get:

  1. Mobile Experience Awards for best-performing European Cities (city-level analysis) and Operators (operator-level analysis)
  2. Insights on 5G deployments and network availability to understand 5G performance versus availability trade-off
  3. Real-field 5G measurements, performance metrics and TRUE QoE KPIs for 11 major cities in Europe
  4. Performance on 5G reliability, accessibility, time-to-content and value for speed, across regular end-user activities, like web browsing, using social networks, gaming etc

We conduct real-world measurements using enterprise-grade 5G smartphones and measurement equipment. The geographical coverage in latest research study encompassed an area of over 2000 km² with more than 4.000 km distance driven, covering more than 35 million inhabitants. Through meticulous calculations and reliable network tests covering metropolitan areas, we ensure that our analysis is truly representative of end-users experience. Our vehicles equipped with mobile devices follow predefined routes, covering key areas of each city and providing accurate and representative data.

MedUX’s Contribution to the Digital Decade 2030 Strategy Through 5G Performance Insights

MedUX contributes insights to operators and regulators to enable the building of resilient infrastructure and the transformation of connectivity into a cornerstone of societal progress. We will highlight disparities in 5G connectivity across Europe. The newest report findings will be revealed at MWC25.

Recent State of Digital of the Digital Decade 2024 report and Draghi’s report were a call for urgent action to ensure citizens and businesses enjoy equitable access to high-performance networks and benefit from the full capabilities offered by 5G everywhere.

We need to bridge these gaps through strategic partnerships with technology leaders and collaboration between policymakers, operators, and stakeholders. Bold national and EU strategies must transform basic connectivity into an impactful tool for societal development, focusing on future-proof technology deployments, high-quality networks and services, and end-users adoption and use cases.

This study aims to shape the EU's connectivity landscape, drive innovation, and secure Europe's place in the global digital economy. Our valuable insights will help understand the importance of advancing meaningful connectivity for all, aligned with Europe’s Digital Decade 2030 targets.
